Invoice total calculator
Get the total right before you send it.
Add line items — or switch to hours and a rate for billable-hours work — apply tax and a discount, and see exactly how the total is built.
Quick answer
In what order should discount and tax be applied to an invoice?
Discount first, then tax on the discounted subtotal. A 10% discount and 8% tax on a $1,000 subtotal gives a $900 taxable amount and $72 tax — not $80.
- Subtotal:
- $1,000
- After 10% discount:
- $900
- Tax at 8%:
- $72

Worth knowing
A few things that trip people up.
Apply the discount before tax, not after — that's the standard order and what this calculator does
A percentage discount and a tax rate both apply to the subtotal, not to each other
For hourly work, hours × rate is exactly the same math as quantity × unit price — switch the toggle for clearer labels, not different math
Round to the currency's smallest unit only at the end, not on every line, to avoid compounding rounding errors
Questions
Common questions.
Does this apply tax before or after the discount?
After. The discount is subtracted from the subtotal first, and tax is calculated on what remains — the standard order most invoicing follows.
Can I use this for hourly / billable-hours invoices?
Yes — switch to "Hourly / billable hours" and enter hours and an hourly rate per line. It's the same underlying calculation as fixed line items; only the labels change.
Is anything I type here saved?
No. Everything recalculates in your browser as you type and nothing is sent anywhere or stored — refreshing the page clears it.
Can StitchInvoice turn this into an actual invoice?
Yes — the invoice generator uses the exact same totals calculation, plus your business and client details, a PDF, and (with a free account) sending and payment tracking.
